Going to come clean this week, perhaps my favorite part of “The Sin-Eater” were the flashbacks. Yes, I know. You must think I’m crazy, but for some reason, they really worked this week. However, the 3rd act's battle scene was pretty awesome as well. Let us begin!
Arrow 5x14 "The Sin-Eater" flashbacks were this reviewer's favorite and I'll get those out of the way first. Oliver (Stephen Amell) is with Anatoly (David Nykl) at a hospital after the Bratva leader was severely beat-up the last we checked. Oliver is plotting a way to deal with Gregor (David Meunier) but Anatoly tells the young American that he needs an army to take on Gregor. He also calls Oliver a "Sin-Eater" and goes on to tell him a story of man who would eat the bodies of dead villagers to take their sins. Weird story, but the main point is Oliver always takes on everyone’s problems as his own. This is something he still deals with in the present. Anatoly’s storytime gets cut short when Oliver realizes that the two are being watched. They try to escape the hospital, fearing Gregor’s men are there to kill them, but are quickly pinned down in a hospital room. Gregor himself shows up and offers to spare Anatoly’s life if Oliver gives himself up, which he pretends to do before taking out Gregor’s remaining men. The final flashback scene ends with Gregor hovering over an injured Anatoly with a gun pointed at his head. This week’s flashback might not have been to exciting or bring us any closer to closure with the Bratva/Kovar storyline, but it really touched on the relationship Oliver has with Anatoly and the story of the Sin-Eater foreshadows Oliver Queen season 1 through now.
Ok enough about the biased opinion on the flashbacks this week. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of the episode. This week’s episode starts off with Oliver traveling to the house of Amanda Westfield (Corina Akeson), the mistress of Justin Clayborne and the mother of Prometheus. Oliver employs her to give up the name of her son so Oliver can bring him to justice and help the hooded villain find some help. She pretty much tells him to screw off and Oliver is back at square one.
The villains of the week happened to be some familiar faces. China White (Kelly Hu), Cupid (Amy Gumenick), and Liza Warner (Rutina Wesley) escape a prison bus and are on a mission to find a $100 million stash of cash from Tobias Church hidden somewhere in Star City. The Green Arrow and Quentin (Paul Blackthorne) track the three escapees to a warehouse as the women are interrogating some low-level thugs on the whereabouts of the stash. Oliver is about to apprehend China and Cupid before he is stopped by the ACU who intend to arrest him for the murder of Billy Malone. The Green Arrow barely escapes but the three women slipped out in the commotion.
Oliver, Adrian (Josh Segarra), and Lance meet with Captain Pike to figure out why the ACU tried to arrest the Green Arrow. He finds out that Pike was anonymously mailed a report from Billy’s autopsy that pins the Green Arrow as the killer and he ordered the ACU to arrest the Arrow. After Pike and Adrian leave the room, Oliver tells Lance that it was Prometheus who sent the autopsy report. The letter came from Opal City, the same city Prometheus’ mother is from.
Oliver goes back to talk to Captain Pike and set the record straight. Oliver lets Pike know that the Green Arrow was tricked by Prometheus to kill Billy and he and Adrian covered up the circumstances of Malone’s death to prevent a city-wide panic. He also tells Pike that he is in contact with the Arrow and that the Green Arrow is going to have to live with Billy’s death for the rest of his life. This leaves Pike questioning what to do next, but meanwhile, Oliver has to still deal with the 3 villains regardless from the threat of the ACU arresting him.
Oliver and the team confront the three women in a cemetery where the money was stored. The women didn’t come alone however, as they brought a bunch of hired guns to take on Team Arrow. The team is outnumbered and it seems that Rene (Rick Gonzalez) was shot. Things go from bad to worse when the ACU shows up, but luckily, Pike has ordered them to help the Green Arrow and arrest all the thugs. The three women are also taken into custody and the Green Arrow thanks Pike for the assist. He also throws a line about how “he is going to have to live with Billy’s death for the rest of his life”, i.e. the same line he told Pike as Mayor Queen. Let’s see if Pike connects all the dots.
The episode ends on a big cliffhanger when Adrian burst into Oliver’s office telling the Mayor that they have a problem. Oliver doesn’t quite take him serious until the TV is turned on to a news report of the cover up between Oliver and Adrian who falsified Billy’s autopsy records. The report ends by stating Oliver might be impeached as a result of the cover up.
-- The "big juicy drama" aside from maybe Oliver’s possible impeachment revolved around good ol’ Susan Williams (Carly Pope). The reporter asked Oliver if he is the Green Arrow after she had done her own investigation. Of course Oliver denies it but Thea (Willa Holland) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) take it upon themselves to deal with the reporter after Oliver lets Thea know of Susan’s suspicions. The two hack Susan’s computer and find all the incriminating evidence on Oliver’s time in Russia. They end up putting false data on Susan’s computer that presents her as a plagiarist in her work for the past few years. She was fired as a result and her career in journalism might be over. Of course she goes off on Oliver, who later goes off on Thea for orchestrating the whole hacking idea. He eventually forgives her by the end of the episode and puts the whole Susan situation on the back burner. One has to wonder how that will bite Oliver in the behind later on this season.
-- Loved Dinah’s (Juliana Harkavy) hesitation to wear a costume. Lucky for her, she only has to wear a mask this week, but she looked amazing in it and we'd want to see her in a Black Canary suit sooner than later.
-- As much as I loved Laurel as the Black Canary, Dinah’s canary cry is superior.
-- Although three women were the villains of tonight’s episode, they seemed to play second fiddle compared to Prometheus who didn’t even need to show up to ruin Oliver’s life yet again.
-- Diggle (David Ramsey) is and will forever be, Oliver’s keeper.
-- Curtis’ (Echo Kellum) new suit is pretty badass! I’m digging it way more than the last one, but I still need some T-Spheres.
-- Rene’s ghost anxiety was a funny throw-away line this week.
-- Since when is Lance able to just go with the Green Arrow on missions. He doesn’t even have a mask!
Rating: Arrow 5x14 “The Sin-Eater”: Great!
Prometheus once again outsmarted Oliver. we got the return of some familiar faces, Curtis got a new suit and Oliver might be impeached pretty soon. Oliver is facing more adversity as mayor this season then he is as the Green Arrow. I mean aside from killing Billy…
Until next time heroes!
