Oh, Legends of Tomorrow! You have made this fanboy very happy. The fun, the laughter, the heartbreak, and all the wibbily, wobbly, timey, wimey stuff. Yes, that was a Doctor Who reference but it fits so perfectly with this show!
Well, the Legends are in quite a pickle. To make reality normal again, they must do the one thing they try to prevent on a weekly basis: create a time aberration to stop the Legion from using the Spear of Destiny. Easier said than done. Part of the team doesn’t have their powers, Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) was killed by Snart (Wentworth Miller), and the Waverider is the size of a football. Luckily the Legends find a way to steal Ray’s (Brandon Routh) atom suit from Thawne (Matt Letscher) and put the Waverider back to its regular size.
The team travels back to 1916 to destroy the Spear of Destiny but nothing is ever that easy for the Legends. First, Ray gets his heart ripped out by Thawne while trying to get the Blood of Christ. Then Mick (Dominic Purcell) , Nate (Nick Zano) , and Rip (Arthur Darvill) impersonate their past selves to gain access to the Waverider to steal the Spear. Finally, Sara (Caity Lotz), Jax (Franz Drameh), and the rest of the team get caught by the Legends of Christmas Past. Insert hilarious paradox interactions and you have yourself one funny scene with both Legends teams.
The final showdown with the Legion begins with all the Legends taking on Merlyn (John Barrowman), Darhk (Neal McDonough), and Snart. The future Legends die in battle except Sara, but they manage to stop the Legion. Reverse-Flash shows up with dozens of other Reverse-Flashes and make quick work of the past Legends. Luckily, Sara uses the Spear to stop Thawne. The Spear takes her to Laurel’s (Katie Cassidy) apartment where the two sisters are having a movie date. Sara starts to doubt whether she can use the Spear properly to remake reality to before the Legion used it. Thankfully, Sara gets a pep-talk from Laurel (a physical form of the Spear?) and makes the right decision. Back in 1916, Thawne steals the Spear from Sara but not before she used the Spear to make it powerless. Before long, Black Flash shows up and erases all the Thawnes from the timeline. The Legends have won and everything is back to normal.
The episode ends with Rip taking his leave from the Team after seeing the Legends are in better shape without him. Hopefully this is not a permanent decision. Also, Amaya decides to stay with the Legends a little longer before returning to 1942 and Mick finally accepts Snart’s death and realizes the Legends are his family now. The final scene ends with the Legends caught in a time storm while trying to travel to Aruba. The team is knocked off course and finds themselves in Los Angeles 2017, where the city is filled with T-Rexes and Big Ben is in the middle of the city.
Legends of Tomorrow’s sophomore season was just outstanding. From start to finish, season two was possibly the most exciting out of the 4 "Arrowverse" shows, and provided the most fun. From George Lucas, to feudal Japan, all the way to Zombies in the Civil War, not one episode of this season disappointed. The cast and crew deserve a standing ovation for the work they put in. Here’s to hoping season 3 manages to stay at par with this season.
Luckily most of the cast should stay relatively the same sans Rip, even though he only played a limited role in this season to begin with. Although we're sad to see the Legion of Doom go as well, hopefully we get a new Legion of Doom lineup somewhere in the future. I’m also hoping the budget for Legends goes up next season so we can get some more Firestorm action because the show lacked the hot-head hero.
The acting this season but especially this episode was phenomenal. All the cast have great chemistry with each other (Something last season had some headaches with due to a couple characters). The introduction of Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Nate (Nick Zano) were refreshing and to see the team work together without Rip most of the time showed how much they have matured. Perhaps the biggest concern this fan has for the future is the longevity of the show. As much as I love the Legends taking on various time aberrations, we also should remember that someday, they all should return to their proper timelines to take on their destiny’s and be the heroes we know from the comics. Yes, Rip originally took the team from the timeline because they were expendable, but I know believe that these superheroes have a purpose outside of monitoring the timeline. One day I'd hope to see Sara be back on Team Arrow and Firestorm helping The Flash in Central City. Hopefully we get a couple more good seasons like season two, but eventually Greg Berlanti and company are going to have to think of an endgame.
-- The Wizard of Oz nod was clever when the Spear brought Sara to Laurel’s apartment.
-- Legends never die!
-- So, the Legends totally stole a neuralyzer from the Men in Black!
-- All those Reverse-Flashes and not one takes the Spear from Sara right away. Sometimes these Arrowverse shows upset me with the way they weaken Speedsters.
-- Little Waverider attacking Darhk was hilarious!
-- The two Sara’s scolding Mick at the same time was great!
-- Wish Snart had a harder time with killing Mick. This was his best friend and partner and he was so quick to stab him in the heart. Even though this was a past Snart, he should have still showed some hesitation.
-- The chemistry between the two actors playing Nate and Amaya is fantastic and works so well.
-- The scene between Sara and Laurel was so incredible but was also sad at the same time. It’s good to see that Sara could move past her demons and take control of the Spear without changing reality for her own intentions, but to see her with Laurel again and have the strength not to bring her sister back to life was heartbreaking yet again.
-- Wonder if all those T-Rexes have it out for Ray…
Until next season heroes!
