Echo Kellum discusses Arrow S5, working with Emily Bett Rickards, Curtis & Felicity and more!

Congratulations on the series regular promotion this season! That has to be very exciting. What’d you do to celebrate?

I made a dance video with Emily on Instagram!

What are you most excited about for this season on Arrow? Both overall and for your character in particular?

I’m excited for the team to really bloom throughout the season; to see them really come into their own. As you can see right now they having some issues. But I can’t wait for people to see when we really hit a stride and start gelling. For Curtis I just want people to see that his struggle at the top of the season will be well worth it when we get toward the end and you start to see him come into his own as well.

Because of Curtis’ position at Palmer Tech, you work very closely with Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity), what has that been like?

It’s been a wonderful experience. Emily is one of the most exemplary humans I’ve ever met in my life. She’s just so awesome. There’s nothing not to love about her; she’s just a wonderful human being.

What’s your favorite part about the relationship between Curtis and Felicity?

That they have each other’s back, they confide in each other, they are there for each other in dark moments, they’re not “yes” men or women to each other, and they keep it real with each other.

What is one thing you’d want to change or see in the future for the two of them?

I would like to see them go out on more fun outings, just to hang out and have some fun together.

Which characters or actors/actresses are you hoping to share more or new scenes with in the future? And see Curtis become friends with as well? You’ve got your pick from a growing list of characters/people from all of the DC Comics shows on The CW!

Thea! Willa's so chill and dope, so I’d love more scenes with her.

We’ve had quite a few scenes of Curtis helping #TeamArrow in times of immediate danger throughout S4, however, I still think my personal favorite scene between the two is the, “You’re terrific, Curtis,” scene from 4x14. It’s such a uniquely optimistic scene, especially in a fairly dark show. – What would you want to see next season for the relationship between Curtis and Oliver specifically?

I would like to see Curtis step up into being closer to Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) equal and not be a liability to the team or someone that they have to worry about. I’d like to see Curtis get sent on his own missions and be able to handle it.

Any funny stories from set?

There was this scene where Rick Gonzalez, Madison McLaughlin and myself were kind of in the background while Emily and Stephen were having a talk. And then Rick in character said, “Hey man, we’re on a TV show!” and Madison and I reacted in our characters and thought “okay, Wild Dog is an insane person." It was really funny.

Any other projects people should keep their heads up for?

Check out “Accounting” if you have Steam VR. I’m doing a voice-over for that. It’s created by Justin Roiland and it’s free on Steam - check that out. I’m in “Girlfriend’s Day”, a movie that’s coming out on Netflix on Valentine’s Day, starring Bob Odenkirk and I co-star in that with him. I have a movie that hopefully will be coming out in the next year that I shot in Nicaragua called “Village People” starring Aya Cash, George Basil, Brandon Scott and myself. Look out for that too!

I’d love to know what shows or movies you’re currently hooked on. What are YOU bingeing right now?

The Walking Dead, Game Of Thrones, The Eric Andre Show, and Nathan For You

If you could be on any one of those or join the cast of any of them, which would it be?  What type of character on that show and why that show or character?

The Walking Dead! I would like to play some Southern character...maybe like some Southern bad guy who gets killed pretty brutally!

And lastly, anything else you would like to say to the readers and viewers?

Thank you so much for even checking out this interview. Without you guys we’re nothing. Hit me up on Twitter and Instagram, say hi and I’ll say hi back!
