Sam Lerner discusses The Goldbergs, Geoff and Erica, working on Project Almanac and more!
For those who haven’t seen The Goldbergs yet, can you tell us what it’s about and why people should be watching S4?
The Goldbergs is a family comedy set in the ‘80s and it’s super funny. The cast is amazing, including Wendi McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin, and the writing just gets better and better.
Can you tell us a bit more about your character and how he fits into the overall storyline?
I play Geoff Schwartz on the show. He’s one of Barry’s (Troy Gentile) best friends and part of the JTP (Jenkintown Posse) but he also has a sort of love triangle going on with the daughter on the show, Erica (Haley Orrantia), and his current girlfriend Evy. In seasons 2 and 3, Geoff is absolutely obsessed with Erica, but after one too many let downs, he becomes Evy’s boyfriend, but now that Erica likes him back, who knows what will happen?
What makes Geoff Schwartz such a fun character for you to play?
Geoff is so fun to play because I get to show a bunch of different sides of myself with the character. When he’s with the JTP, he’s a goofy guy who is fun and funny, but when it comes to his love life he’s a lot more earnest and deep than expected. It’s fun for me as an actor to get to challenge myself with the more serious stuff, and also get to have fun with the comedy.
If you could change anything about his arc what would it be? Or alternatively, what would you love to see from him going forward?
I think personally I want what a lot of the fans want; for Geoff and Erica to finally get together. There’s been such a huge buildup across 3 seasons now, and it’s sort of like Jim and Pam from The Office, or Ross and Rachel from Friends, where you just want to see them together. So as a fan of the show I think it would be awesome if they finally got together.
A few years back, you also appeared in Project Almanac, what was that experience like?
Project Almanac was so much fun, and a huge deal for me. It was a really cool sci-fi time travel movie produced by Michael Bay! Starring in a studio film of that caliber was a dream come true and I learned so much from it. We shot in Atlanta, which was a new place for me, and I met some lifelong friends that I’m very happy to be close with.
Do you find yourself wanting more film work as opposed to TV? Or vice versa?
As an actor, working in general is amazing. I’m happy to work on whatever comes my way, if I’m connected to the material. Working in film is different because there’s usually a little more creative freedom in terms of improvisation and making a character your own, which is cool. But TV is amazing too, and especially on a show like The Goldbergs, it can be extremely special and rewarding.
Is there a particular genre of work you’re hoping to try next? Why?
I would love to continue to challenge myself and work on more drama in the future. I love comedy and tend to gravitate towards that, so as far as deepening myself and improving my craft, working on more drama could be helpful for my career.
I like throwing this out there because sometimes people have answers ready – What’s your dream role or character in a film or TV show?
My dream role is to work on anything that Judd Apatow does. I’m a huge fan of him and everything he’s done, as well as all the guys he has put on the map, such as Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, etc.
And lastly, anything you’d like to say to readers or those watching The Goldbergs?
Thanks for watching the show! Keep your eyes peeled for what might happen between Geoff and Erica! I feel it coming.
